Essential Gear for Packaging Day
Selecting the right tools protects your beer against oxygen exposure and contamination while speeding up your bottling workflow:
- Crown Cappers: Choose between lightweight double-lever hand cappers for standard 26mm crown seals or heavy-duty bench cappers that easily adjust to fit various bottle heights and champagne-style necks.
- Spring-Loaded Bottle Fillers: A must-have attachment for your fermenter tap or AutoSiphon. By filling bottles from the bottom up, you drastically reduce splashing, foaming, and oxidation.
- Counter-Pressure & Gun Fillers: Advanced filling units—such as the KegLand BeerGun or Counter Pressure Bottle Filler—allow you to transfer pre-carbonated beer straight from a keg into bottles under CO2 pressure without losing carbonation or introducing air.
- Cleaning & Sanitising Tools: Bottle washers, rinser injectors (Avvinatore), and multi-tier bottle drying trees allow you to thoroughly wash, sanitise, and drain dozens of bottles in minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions: Bottling Homebrew in NZ
What is the difference between a hand capper and a bench capper?
Hand Cappers (Double Lever): Portable and budget-friendly. They grip the collar of standard 26mm glass bottles to crimp the crown cap. However, they require two hands and can struggle with non-standard bottle neck shapes.
Bench Cappers: Mounted on a stable base, bench cappers use a single downward lever action. They are faster, require less effort, easily adjust for varying bottle heights, and significantly reduce the risk of accidentally snapping bottle necks.
How do I properly sanitise beer bottles before filling?
Bottles must be completely clean and free of visible yeast sediment before sanitising. Use a bottle rinser/injector filled with a no-rinse sanitiser (like StellarSan or Star San) to blast the inside of each bottle, then invert the bottles on a bottle tree to drain briefly before filling. Do not rinse with tap water after applying no-rinse sanitiser.
Why should I use a spring-loaded bottle filler wand?
A spring-loaded filler wand connects directly to your fermenter tap or transfer hose. The valve opens only when pressed against the bottom of the bottle and automatically cuts off the liquid flow when lifted. This fills the bottle from the bottom up to prevent oxidation and leaves the perfect amount of headspace (ullage) once removed.
What is a counter-pressure bottle filler and do I need one?
Counter-pressure fillers are designed for brewers who carbonate their beer in kegs but want to transfer it into bottles for competitions, gifts, or long-term storage. By purging the bottle with CO2 gas and pressurising it before liquid transfer, counter-pressure fillers keep carbonation locked in the beer while preventing oxygen exposure.
How many carbonation drops or how much priming sugar should I add per bottle?
For standard carbonation levels using Carbonation Drops, use 1 drop for 330ml–375ml bottles or 2 drops for 750ml bottles. If priming with pure dextrose sugar, aim for approximately 6g–8g of dextrose per litre of beer dissolved into a bulk priming solution or dosed per bottle.
