Types of Beer Kits & How to Elevate Your Brew
Extract brewing allows you to skip the lengthy all-grain mashing process while still crafting full-flavoured ales, lagers, and IPAs:
- Standard Malt Extract Cans (1.5kg–1.7kg): Classic beer kits containing concentrated malt extract and hop bitterness. These require the addition of liquid malt extract (LME), dry malt extract (DME), or a brew enhancer to reach full batch volume and strength.
- Craft Series Pouches & Two-Can Kits: Complete craft beer kits that feature premium hop additions for dry-hopping and style-specific yeast strains for genuine brewery-quality results.
- Customising Your Kit: Easily upgrade any standard beer kit by swapping the default kit yeast for a strain from Fermentis or Lallemand, or by dry-hopping with fresh NZ or US hop pellets during fermentation.
Frequently Asked Questions: Homebrew Beer Kits in NZ
What else do I need besides a beer kit to brew beer?
If you already have a standard homebrew starter setup (a 30L fermenter, airlock, hydrometer, and sanitiser), all you need is your chosen beer kit, water, and an additional fermentable sugar source (such as 1kg of dextrose, Brew Enhancer, or Liquid Malt Extract) unless you are using a complete two-can kit.
Can I use normal household white table sugar (sucrose) in my kit?
While standard household sugar (sucrose) will ferment into alcohol, using 100% white sugar can make your beer thin, cidery, and lack body. For better head retention, mouthfeel, and rich malt flavour, we strongly recommend using Pure Dextrose, a Brew Enhancer blend, or Pure Liquid Malt Extract (LME) instead.
How long does a homebrew beer kit take to ferment and mature?
Fermentation typically takes between 7 to 14 days at standard ale temperatures (18°C–22°C). Once bottled or kegged, give your beer at least 2 weeks in the bottle to properly carbonate and condition before drinking. Darker or heavier beers benefit from a few extra weeks of conditioning.
Can I add extra hops to a canned beer kit?
Absolutely! Dry-hopping is one of the easiest ways to transform a basic malt extract kit into an aromatic craft Pale Ale or IPA. Simply add 30g to 100g of fresh T90 hop pellets (such as Citra, Mosaic, or Nelson Sauvin) straight into your fermenter 3 to 4 days before bottling.
How do I know when my beer kit has finished fermenting?
Never rely solely on airlock activity to judge fermentation. The only foolproof way is to use a hydrometer. Take gravity readings over two consecutive days; if the Specific Gravity (SG) reading stays identical, fermentation is complete and your beer is safe to bottle.
